2a. Artificial Intelligence and Automated Processing
In Short: Wonders uses AI to power core research features. Academic content you submit is processed by third-party AI providers. Your personal information is never sent to AI providers.
AI-Powered Features
Wonders uses artificial intelligence to help you research, summarize, and understand academic literature. The following features are powered by AI models:
Research Summaries — Synthesizes key findings across multiple papers from your search results.
Paper Q&A — Generates questions about a paper and answers them based on the paper's content.
Paper Chat — Interactive AI chat that answers your questions about a specific paper.
AI Key Points — Generates accessible summaries of individual papers.
Conclusions — Analyzes and synthesizes findings across all your research searches.
Writing Assistant — Offers suggestions to improve, expand, summarize, or rephrase your writing in the notebook.
Topic & Keyword Generation — Suggests research directions and search keywords based on your research question.
Search Ranking — AI-assisted relevance scoring influences the order in which search results are displayed.
All AI-generated content is labeled with an "AI-generated" indicator in the user interface and links to our AI Transparency page.
AI Service Providers (Sub-Processors)
We use the following third-party AI service providers to process your content. Each provider acts as a data sub-processor under our instructions:
Provider | Models | Purpose | Data Processing Location |
|---|---|---|---|
Anthropic, PBC | Claude (Opus, Sonnet, Haiku) | Paper chat, conclusions, complex research analysis | United States |
OpenAI, Inc. | GPT-4o-mini, text-embedding-ada-002 | Q&A generation, writing suggestions, semantic embeddings | United States |
Together AI, Inc. | Llama 3.3 70B Instruct | Research summaries, keyword generation | United States |
We maintain Data Processing Agreements (DPAs) with each provider. These providers process data solely to fulfill your requests and do not use your content to train their models.
What Data Is Sent to AI Providers
When you use AI-powered features, the following types of content may be transmitted to the providers listed above:
Paper abstracts, full text, and metadata (title, authors, journal, year, DOI)
Your search queries and research questions
Chat messages you type when using the Paper Chat feature
Text you select when using the Writing Assistant in the notebook
We do not send your personal information (name, email address, institutional affiliation, payment details) to AI service providers. Only the academic content necessary to generate a response is transmitted.
Automated Decision-Making
We use AI-assisted relevance scoring to rank search results. This ranking considers factors such as citation count, publication venue quality, recency, and semantic relevance to your query. These weights are adjusted by domain — for example, fast-moving fields like AI weight recency more heavily than established fields like mathematics.
You are not subject to decisions based solely on automated processing that produce legal effects or similarly significantly affect you, within the meaning of GDPR Article 22.
Limitations of AI-Generated Content
AI-generated content may contain inaccuracies, omissions, or misinterpretations. It is not a substitute for reading original research papers and does not constitute legal, financial, medical, or any other professional advice. We recommend verifying AI-generated outputs against original source material.
3. What Legal Bases Do We Rely On to Process Your Personal Information?

Legitimate Interests. We may process your information when it is reasonably necessary to achieve our legitimate business interests and those interests do not outweigh your interests and fundamental rights. Examples include: sending users information about special offers; analyzing how our Services are used so we can improve them; processing academic content through AI models to deliver the research assistance service you signed up for (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)).
Legal Obligations. We may process your information where necessary for compliance with our legal obligations.
Vital Interests. We may process your information where necessary to protect your vital interests or the vital interests of a third party.

In legal terms, we are generally the "data controller" under European data protection laws, since we determine the means and/or purposes of the data processing we perform.
This privacy notice does not apply to the personal information we process as a "data processor" on behalf of our customers. If You Are Located in Canada
We may process your information if you have given us specific permission (express consent), or in situations where your permission can be inferred (implied consent). You can withdraw your consent at any time.
In some exceptional cases, we may be legally permitted to process your information without your consent, including for fraud detection and prevention, business transactions meeting certain conditions, compliance with court orders, and other circumstances permitted under applicable Canadian law.
